Residents in Blantyre are petitioning for significant work to be done to roads and pathways in the area.
A petition has been lodged for South Lanarkshire Council to undertake work to improve the footpaths and roads on Willow Drive, Bardykes Road, Larch Court and Sycamore Drive.
Out of 54 signatories, 47 are over the age of 60 and 15 have impaired mobility, therefore the pavements are a key concern for residents.
Mary Bennett, the lead petitioner, wrote to the council stating: “It is imperative that significant remedial work is carried out to improve the situation.
“The conditions are bad in good weather but are absolutely treacherous over the winter period.”
Councillor Lynne Nailon for Hamilton South visited the area and said: "I wouldn’t call the pavements tired, I’d call them totally exhausted, I was quite shocked its not bad all over the place, but there are patches of it that are quite concerning.
“The greatest damage or deterioration appears to be in front of people's houses.
“ I am gravely concerned at the state of some parts of these pavements.”
The Roads and Transport Services (RTS) have stated that roads and pathways are only resurfaced if they meet the assessment criteria which is based upon several different factors that contributes to an overall score to help prioritise resources.
The assessment is carried out on a council-wide basis to make sure that funds are being used to target roads and footways that are needing significant work.
The RTS inspected Willow Drive, Barrdykes Road, Larch Court and Sycamore Drive on August 27 and found no issues that required immediate repair, but the pavements were showing signs of natural deterioration.
At a Petitions Committee meeting, Mrs Bennett said: “I still find it difficult that the roads department can say it's simply wear and tear.
“The pavements are positively dangerous.”
The total estimated cost to repair both roads and pavements in the area is £285 thousand.
Councillors at the Petitions Committee on Monday, November 22, agreed to refer the issue back to the roads department to undertake essential works in the next financial year and to prioritise the area.
