Blantyre Miners Welfare to temporarily close from midnight tonight as coronavirus crisis heightens

Blantyre Miners Welfare Centre have made the decision to temporarily close the business from midnight tonight.

Board members gathered for an emergency meeting on Tuesday when the decision was made to shut up shop in a bid to keep all clientele safe from the spread of coronavirus.

They will gather again in two weeks to review the situation.

Board member Michael McCann told the Advertiser: "It is with regret that we have come to the decision to temporarily close Blantyre Miners Welfare from midnight tonight (Tuesday) for the time being.

"It is paramount that we keep our members and indeed all clientele safe from the spread of coronavirus.

"A lot of our members are in the vulnerable age group and therefore we had to come to this decision on the back of UK Government advice on Monday.

"We will however review the situation every fortnight."

It is understood three private functions were due to be held in the Welfare over the weekend and these have also been cancelled.
