Blantyre kid tipped for the top after signing for Celtic

Blantyre Soccer Academy chief Jimmy Whelan expects Matthew Anderson to follow in Kieran Tierney’s foot steps after the teenager signed a professional contract with Celtic.

While disappointed to lose the 16-year-old Blantyre left-back, Whelan says it’s brilliant to see Anderson doing so well.

Anderson started at BSA when he was four, was picked up by Celtic for a year, then sent back to Blantyre, where Motherwell took him on.

But Celtic came back in for him last year, meaning the St John Ogilvie High pupil moved to St Ninian’s Academy in Bishopbriggs, and he has now signed a pro contract with the Scottish champions.

Whelan said: “It’s fantastic for us as a club, and it’s great to see Matthew doing so well.

“For us as a club, we’re in our 10th year and it has been fantastic to see boys like that progress.

“I know Matthew personally, I’ve known him since he was four, so it is fantastic to see him sign for Celtic.

“He is dedicated, he has his head screwed on and is very academic. Celtic are letting him finish his education, and then bringing him back in.

“His parents swithered a bit, but when they saw what Celtic had to offer, they felt it was the right club for him.

“He really is one to watch, he is the real deal, and could be like Kieran Tierney.”
