Blankets by Craig Thompson - review

Blankets by Craig Thompson

Technically this isn't a children's book, but I recommend it to any person who loves a good story.

It is the first graphic novel I have ever read and it is mind blowing in the sense of power that it can hold on you. From the first page it grasps you with its carefully placed words and has been one of the best books that I have ever read.

It is set in America and features a family that are very strict Christians, who cannot afford the luxuries of heaven on earth and have a behave now and God will reward you attitude. They send their children to church camp at Christmas and have a dislike for children who sin.

So If Craig and his brother argue, as a punishment, their parents will lock one of them in the cubby hole for the night. Craig is brought up not really knowing what to believe. Is God real? Will I really go to hell if I sin? So to escape from the realities of a cruel world Craig starts to draw.

This is a magical book, enchanting you and leading you into another world of harsh punishments and even more cruel realities. This book is one of a kind.
