Blanchardstown shooting: Shocked locals knew 'there would eventually be an incident' at home where two Gardai injured in shootout

Shocked locals said they knew there would eventually be an incident at the home where two gardai were injured after a shootout with a man in Dublin.

The shocking scenes transpired this evening in the Whitechapel area of Blanchardstown.

Several garda cars, trucks, and personnel flooded the area in response to reports of a man firing an automatic rifle out of his window.

Backup quickly rushed to the scene after one officer was reportedly shot in the hand, with another shot in the foot.

Both officers' were transported to nearby Connolly Hospital, and their injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

A machine gun and a pistol were recovered at the scene after the tense standoff that lasted a number of hours.

One local man, who was asked if it was unusual for something like that to happen in the area, said: "It could happen anywhere.

"That's the situation in Dublin and everywhere .

"Ah no, it's not a surprise, I knew eventually there'd be an incident there in that house.

"There's a house behind us and there was shots fired a few years ago as well."

Meanwhile, local Cllr Ted Leddy said: "It was very traumatic for the local community here in Whitechapel, I'm glad it's all over and I hope the Gardai aren't too seriously injured.

He also tweeted: "Thankfully this incident has ended without fatalities. Very frightening for the community. It’s a real reminder of the dangers our brave Gardai face."
