The latest botched gangland hit at a west Dublin Lidl supermarket failed because the gun the shooter was using jammed.
Dublin Live can reveal that the gun misfired and the gunman could only fire one round before having to flee the scene.
The hit was against convicted armed robber Noel Boylan who was shot outside the supermarket in a gangland hit.
A source said: "This shooting was an attempt to murder this man but the gun jammed as the shooter launched his attack.
"The criminals are storing their guns in fields and derelict buildings - they are normally wrapped in plastic and cloth and can be rubbed with grease or oil.
"The thing is these guns are high precision weapons and they need to be carefully maintained - the criminals are not maintaining them."
Noel Boylan's son Lee Boylan was riddled with bullets in a botched hit earlier this year - on that occasion the gunman used a small .22 calibre handgun that fired underpowered rounds.
He is still suffering from his injuries and is understood to be making a slow recovery.
A number of botched hits have taken place in which a gun has jammed or misfired.
In one famous incident a gun used by criminals who were en route to kill gangland target Michael Frazer used a gun with the wrong sized ammunition.
Gardai have renewed their appeal for help in tracking down the shooter at shopping centre at Blakestown Way, Dublin.
The gardai in Blanchardstown have requested that people who witnessed anything in the "Blakestown Way, Blanchardstown at approximately 5.20pm on Saturday the 1st June 2019" to make contact.
A garda spokesman said: "The suspected getaway vehicle was a Navy Blue/Black Toyota Avensis (06 MH 1181).
"The car was purchased on the 27th May. Did anyone observe this car between the 27th May and the 1st June 2019? This vehicle was later found burnt out at the Miller’s Glen area of Swords on Sat 1st June 2019.
"Did anyone in that area observe the car prior to it being set on fire?"
