Blake Lively has divided her fans and critics with an Instagram post including the lyrics “LA face with an Oakland booty.”
The actress shared images of herself from the front and from behind on her page during an appearance at Cannes Film Festival under the lyric from Sir Mix-A-Lot’s “Baby Got Back”.
Lively was criticised for sharing the lyrics as a privileged white woman by some users, while the feminist blog Jezebel branded it “problematic” because of the division set up in the line.
Author JE Reich wrote: “In the end, it touts a diametrical opposition: that Los Angeles can be equated to elegance and/or beauty (read: whiteness), and that Oakland is its foil (read: blackness).”
However, a number of people criticised the reaction, with some suggesting that if there is an issue, it lies with the lyrics, not Lively.
Representatives for Lively did not respond to a request for comment.
