Blake Bortles named Titans’ best remaining free-agent option

The Tennessee Titans are going into the 2020 season with Logan Woodside as the backup to starter Ryan Tannehill, and their backup plan for Woodside was to keep veteran Trevor Siemian on the practice squad.

However, if the Titans aren’t convinced either of those players are a good enough solution to backup Tannehill, there is another option out there.

Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon listed the best remaining free-agent option for every team in the NFL, and he chose quarterback Blake Bortles for the Titans.

If you’ve kept up with our coverage of the Titans’ backup quarterback situation, you know we have been a proponent of signing Bortles all offseason, and that has not changed with the season-opener just days away.

The reason behind that is Bortles plenty of starting experience, and his big arm and ability to scramble more closely mirrors the skill set Tannehill brings to the table, which would help with continuity if Tannehill were to get hurt.

Of course, Bortles would have to pick up a new offense if he were to come to Tennessee, and that takes time. However, he could thrive in a quarterback-friendly offense that revolves around running back Derrick Henry and the threat he poses with the ball in his hands.

Bortles was a first-round pick (No. 3 overall) of the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he spent his first five season and made a trip to the AFC Championship Game in 2017. He spent the 2019 season with the Los Angeles Rams as the backup to Jared Goff.
