Blake Bortles canceled visit with Broncos during free agency

The Denver Broncos had some interest in veteran quarterback Blake Bortles when he became a free agent earlier this offseason.

Bortles said during an appearance on the Pardon My Take podcast this week that he canceled visits with the Broncos and Baltimore Ravens after his visit with the Los Angeles Rams went well.

“We kind of had a schedule and the Rams was the first [visit] and after spending a day there, I knew that was where I wanted to be,” Bortles explained. “So I kind of just shut it down there and got it done.”

Bortles signed a one-year deal with L.A. and opted not to make the other free agency visits he had scheduled.

“I had a meeting with Denver and then Baltimore [that were canceled],” Bortles said.

The Broncos set up a visit with Bortles after the team had acquired Joe Flacco, so Bortles would have potentially been signed to be a backup. Had Denver signed Bortles, the team’s odds of selecting a quarterback in the draft likely would have dropped significantly.

At the moment, Flacco, Kevin Hogan and Garrett Grayson are the only quarterbacks on the team’s roster. It wouldn’t be surprising to see the Broncos add another QB through the draft later this month.
