Blaine Gabbert was the only QB with over 100 dropbacks and a lower overall PFF grade than Ryan Tannehill in 2018

After Blaine Gabbert failed to consistently get the job done in 2018 behind Marcus Mariota, the Tennessee Titans decided it was time to move on.

The team made the decision to acquire quarterback Ryan Tannehill from the Miami Dolphins via a trade in order to place a more solid option behind Marcus Mariota.

While Tannehill is considered superior to Gabbert in many aspects by analysts, the two signal-callers do find themselves practically neck-and-neck in regards to their overall Pro Football Focus grade.

And it’s not exactly in a positive way, either.

According to PFF’s Cam Mellor, the only quarterback with 100 or more dropbacks who has a lower grade than Tannehill (45.3) is Gabbert.

Tannehill also finished the 2018 season with the second-lowest Total QBR (35.4) in the NFL, besting only rookie Josh Rosen (25.9).

As he enters the 2019 season signed to a one-year deal with $7 million garunteed, it will be interesting to see if Tannehill proves to provide the solidity the Titans need behind their undisputed starter.
