Blagojevich and the British - poets, that is

Alfred Tennyson

Rod Blagojevich has been impeached. An occasion, the Illinois governor thinks, that calls for a bit of verse.

Last month, under pressure to resign, he took comfort in Kipling's If. Things are more serious now, apparently: It's time for Tennyson.

Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will, indeed.

UPDATE:

Lieutenant governor Pat Quinn has responded to our question. His pick: sold old New Englander Katharine Lee Bates and America the Beautiful:

O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife.
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life!
