Blaenavon fire: Huge blaze as emergency services swarm on area and tell public stay away

A huge blaze has broken out on an industrial estate in South Wales with people told to stay away as fire crews tackle the incident.

Huge flames and plumes of smoke can be seen lighting up Blaenavon, between Pontypool and Abergavenny, where the blaze has caught hold at the Gilchrist Thomas Industrial Estate.

Shortly before midnight, Gwent Police said that officers are dealing with a large fire at the industrial estate which is known to have a wide range of commercial properties and industrial units.

It told people to keep away from the area while fire crews have warned residents to keep their windows and doors closed, reported WalesOnline.

Unconfirmed reports say that the blaze is sweeping through a caravan repair centre on the estate.

The cause of the blaze is currently unknown

Gwent Police said in a tweet: "Officers are dealing with a large fire on the Gilchrist Thomas Industrial Estate, Blaenavon. Please avoid the area."

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service also advised residents to keep windows and doors closed.

It tweeted: "We are currently dealing with an incident in Blaenavon. Please avoid the area to keep access for emergency services. We are also advising local residents to keep windows and doors closed due to the smoke."

It sparked hundreds of people in the area commenting on social media, with many believing that it was a caravan store and hoping that there were no injuries.

One person wrote: “Still fire engines going past now.”

Another said: “I hope no one is hurt.”

While one Facebook user stated: "I just hope there is no one hurt especially all the emergency services who risk their own lives doing there jobs."
