Blaenau Ffestiniog grass fire sees houses evacuated and mountain ablaze

A major grass fire has seen around 20 homes evacuated.

The fire started in the Llechwedd Slate quarry area near Blaenau Ffestiniog overnight but was still burning on Tuesday morning.

It is one of several grass fires that have blighted Wales over the warm Easter weekend, which saw Wales break temperature records.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service  were called to a fire in  Port Talbot  in the early hours of Sunday and were still at the scene nearly 12 hours later.

Crews also battled a mountainside fire near Rudry in  Caerphilly , a forest near  Blackwood  and a grass fire at  Hirwaun .

A spokeswoman from the control room said one grass fire in Ogmore Vale destroyed 800 square metres of forestry land. The fire service confirmed the number of call outs they received on Sunday was in double figures.

Another "large fire" on the Bwlch Mountain, covering 36 hectares, was extinguished just after midnight. And these pictures show a fire tearing through land near Ammanford.

A static caravan was also reduced to ash after a fire at the Trecco Bay holiday park.

A spokesman for the fire service said the fire was mostly out by Tuesday morning but five fire engines remain on the scene of the incident.
