Blackpool set to 'roll out welcome mat' to staycation tourists

With holidays abroad looking increasingly unlikely this summer, people are looking to holiday in the UK - and Blackpool is "rolling out the welcome mat" to tourists.

The seaside resort has been hit hard by the coronavirus restrictions, with tourism remaining shuttered.

But from next month the town is hoping to bounce back, with tourism bosses hopeful of getting the resort's fortunes back on track.

Under the Prime Minister's roadmap from April 12 businesses such as zoos, fairs and theme parks will also be able to welcome visitors once more.

Restaurants and pubs will also be allowed to serve food and drink, but only outdoors - reports Lancashire Live.

The roadmap has given a sense of hope to those operating leisure and hospitality businesses in Blackpool, with the council saying it will be welcoming tourists back willingly from this date.

Cllr Gillian Campbell, Cabinet Member for Tourism & Culture for Blackpool Council, said: “Our tourism industry has been preparing for months for the long-awaited reopening.

"Hundreds of our businesses have secured the national ‘Good To Go’ COVID-compliant accreditation standard which will help ensure that our visitors have a safe and enjoyable experience.

“We were the first destination in the country to utilise COVID marshals last year and we will be looking to expand that resource over the coming months.

"We have also compiled a comprehensive set of information on the VisitBlackpool website which will help families to plan ahead and book tickets in those venues and attractions that are operating with limited capacity.

“It has been a long time coming but from April 12 we are ready to roll out the welcome mat.”

One of the resorts main attractions, Blackpool Pleasure Beach, has already announced it will be opening its gates to visitors at the earliest opportunity.

A statement from the park bosses released earlier this month said: "In a statement on Facebook this evening, a Blackpool Pleasure Beach spokesperson said: "In line with Government guidelines, we plan to re-open COVID secure and 'Good To Go' on Monday 12th April.

"We look forward to welcoming you back to share in our 125th year."
