Blackpool's former Liverpool midfielder an injury doubt to face Bristol Rovers

Blackpool look set to be without one of their key midfield figures for their opening day encounter with Bristol Rovers.

Matty Virtue, who signed for the Seasiders last January, has missed Blackpool's last two pre-season games including their 2-0 defeat against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.

The Gas travel to Bloomfield Road on Saturday for their first game of the 2019/20 League One season having completed an impressive double over the Tangerines last campaign.

Blackpool manager Simon Grayson admitted Virtue, 22, might not recover in time for Saturday's curtain raiser.

“His thigh is a little bit more tight than we expected last week after the Fylde game," the Pool boss told The Blackpool Gazette.

“He might be a doubt for next weekend.”

Virtue made 13 appearances last season, scoring three times having moved from Liverpool on a two and half year deal.

Grayson also said summer signing James Husband who needs time to get up to speed.

The left-back joined the League One club on a season-long loan from Norwich City last week.

Grayson said: “Friday in training was the first bit of football he’s done in all of pre-season in terms of being with a group"

“He’s previously been in a group that’s not done a great deal of work, small numbers, you can probably use the phrase ‘bomb squad’."
