Blackpool Illuminations switch on 2019 - when it starts, who is performing and how to get tickets

Blackpool Illuminations returns next month with Coronation Street actress Lucy Fallon set to turn on the lights.

The seaside resort is set to light up a six-mile stretch across its promenade on Friday, August 30 - for 66 nights.

The Blackpool-born actress, who has won a number of TV awards for her role as Bethany Platt in the ITV soap, will press the button in front of 20,000 people, reports the Manchester Evening News .

Lucy said: "I'm so excited and honoured to be switching on the Illuminations in Blackpool this year - it's always been a special tradition here and as a local girl it is going to be extra special this year for me and my family."

To mark the special event, a lineup of performers will take to the stage at Tower Headland, including Busted, Becky Hill, Nina Nesbitt and Sigma.

Britain’s Got Talent winners Diversity will also perform.

Councillor Gillian Campbell, deputy leader of Blackpool council, said: "We are delighted to welcome one of our truly home-grown talents to the Switch-On stage.

"Lucy is one of the brilliant new talents in television drama and has enjoyed an incredible rise to fame over the past few years. We can’t wait for her to take the starring role on the biggest night in Blackpool’s calendar."

The Switch-On event will be free, with people invited to apply for the 20,000 tickets that will guarantee entry to the arena - with half of these going exclusively to Blackpool residents.

The free ticket ballot closes at noon on Monday 29 July.
