Blackpool and Portsmouth join Bristol Rovers and several others in chase for Plymouth defender - report

Bristol Rovers face stiff competition in their pursuit of a 6ft 5in centre-back as they begin their search for Tom Lockyer's replacement.

Blackpool and Portsmouth have reportedly joined the Gas in the race to sign Plymouth's Ryan Edwards.

Rovers were initially said to be vying with fellow League One sides Doncaster Rovers, Fleetwood Town, Peterborough United and relegated Bradford City for the 25-year-old's signature.

However, journalist and gossip guru Alan Nixon has suggested Pompey and the Tangerines are also in the running.

Edwards is out of contract at the Pilgrims but is understood to have been offered a new deal at Argyle but following the club's relegation into League Two on the final day of the season is looking at his options away from Home Park.

Bradford have also been relegated, so their chances might be slim but Edwards evidently has plenty of suitors back in League One.

Graham Coughlan begins backroom shake-up as Bristol Rovers development squad coach departs

Doncaster, the Posh and Pompey all finished in or around the play-off places so could be attractive destinations should Edwards have Championship ambitions.

Rovers boss Graham Coughlan, who of course has strong links to Plymouth having played for the club and has  recently been linked with the vacant manager's job , looks set to add to his defence with club captain Tom Lockyer departing the Pirates as a free agent his summer.

Right back Daniel Leadbitter is also leaving Rovers this summer while James Clarke has yet to agree a new contract but is in discussions.

According to reports a number of Scottish Premiership sides are also ready to try and land the defender this summer who has previously played for Morecombe, Chesterfield, Rochdale and Blackburn.
