Blackpill Lido has reopened in Swansea after work to clean up cooking oil poured in by vandals

Blackpill Lido in Swansea has reopened today after a vandalism attack forced a major clean-up operation.

At 1am on Thursday, August 1, vandals poured two drums of cooking oil into the pool at the popular attraction.

It happened during the busy Summer holiday season affecting the plans of many families with young children.

Police have since released CCTV images of two people they want to speak to in connection with the attack, but so far no-one has been arrested.

The lido was also closed in June because vandals shattered glass in the pool.

Some of the youngsters involved admitted their guilt and took part in restorative justice, doing a litter pick at Blackpill.

Swansea Council said following the latest incident it did not want the pool to be unsafe for families to use, or risk damaging the filters, so it had been closed since last Thursday while the clean-up operation took place.

The Lido had to be completely drained and scrubbed with chemicals, it was then jet washed to get rid of all the remaining oil.

Council workers had to clean filters, pipework and tanks to make sure no residue was left to re-contaminate the water.

Final safety checks were carried out this morning, after the pool was refilled over the weekend.

Robert Francis-Davies, Swansea Council’s cabinet member for investment, regeneration and tourism, said: “I am pleased that we have been able to reopen the lido as soon as possible and I would like to thank those who worked extra hours immediately after the attack and over the weekend to make this possible.

“The lido is a very popular free attraction that we know is valued by young families.

“It remains frustrating that this was the second time we have been forced to shut the lido this year due to acts of vandalism and I sincerely hope it is the last.

“I would urge visitors to any of our attractions in Swansea to help us look after them so that they can continue to be enjoyed by all.

"If anyone sees anything suspicious we would urge them to report it immediately to available staff or to the police."
