Blackout Alcatraz map: What we know about new Call of Duty Black Ops 4 update

It's the news Call of Duty fans have been waiting for - Black Ops 4's Blackout is getting a new map.

The Alcatraz-inspired map has launched on Call of Duty's battle royale mode, with gamers eager to get their hands on it.

Named after the prison island off the coast of San Francisco, the map will be released on the PS4 first before hitting other platforms later.

Here's everything you need to know.

When is the new Call of Duty map out?

The new battle royale map went live on the PS4 today, on Tuesday April 2.

It is expected to be made available on the PC and Xbox One in around a week's time.

What do we know about the new map?

Not a huge amount, as the map has only recently gone live.

However, Alcatraz has previously been used as the setting for a number of Call of Duty Zombies maps, such as the Mob of the Dead map.

Unsurprisingly, the map has a strong prison-theme with a trailer showing action taking place both inside and outside the complex.

And judging by the trailer it all looks a bit claustrophobic and gloomy, which is fitting as developer Treyarch has described it as the backdrop for "Close Quarters Battle Royale".

The map has reportedly designed with close-quarters, fast-paced fighting in mind and the map certainly looks to fit that mould, looking noticeably smaller than maps in the past and featuring long, dark corridors and open hallways.

According to the recently-released trailer, flamethrowers could play a big part in any close-quarters fighting and new additions include more cosmetic outfits.

It also looks like the "Down But Not Out" mode - where team members can respawn as long as one member is still alive - will be the main type of fighting.

As Call of Duty's creator Treyarch said: "The new Blackout Alcatraz map is set in a fog-filled island boasting a variety of environments that all lead up to the big cell house atop the hill.

"Requiring new strategies and tactics, players will drop in, gear up and fight through both close-quarters combat and long-range exterior firefights as they battle to be the last squad standing."
