VANCOUVER, British Columbia_If the rest are anything like the Chicago Blackhawks' first game of the new decade, get ready for another wild ride.
After combining for six goals in the second period, the Vancouver Canucks and Hawks traded goals in the third before Adam Gaudette scored with 4 minutes, 11 seconds remaining to give the Canucks a 7-5 win at Rogers Arena.
The Hawks couldn't convert a power play in the final minutes, and the Canucks added an empty-net goal with 8.8 seconds left.
The loss snapped the Hawks' three-game winning streak and dropped them to 18-18-6.
The Canucks went ahead 5-4 with 11:50 left in third when a save by Robin Lehner rebounded off the back of Dennis Gilbert's leg and into the net. Patrick Kane's second goal of the game and 24th of the season tied it with 6:16 remaining.
The Canucks picked up the first power play less than five minutes into the game and scored two seconds after it expired. Bo Horvat sent a shot toward the net from above the right faceoff circle, and J.T. Miller deflected it in from the slot to make it 1-0.
The Hawks and Canucks scored three goals apiece over a span of 8:57 in the second period. The Canucks got the first one on a Tanner Pearson deflection, but the Hawks rebounded with goals by David Kampf, Kane and Jonathan Toews in just 4:02.
Kane's two goals moved him to within nine of 1,000 career points.
The Canucks didn't waste much time climbing back into the game, however, as Quinn Hughes fired in a shot from the blue line. Elias Pettersson scored 1:25 later on a faceoff to tie it at 4.
