The Chicago Blackhawks pulled out a shocker Wednesday night, getting a tying goal from Matthew Highmore with 5:47 to play before Jonathan Toews scored the winner with 1:16 left for a 4-3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers in Game 3 of their Stanley Cup qualifier series.
With the Hawks up 2-1 in the best-of-five series in Edmonton, the Oilers face possible elimination in Game 4 on Friday.
The winning goal initially was credited to Connor Murphy for tipping in an assist from Duncan Keith, but upon review the puck went in off Toews' knee.
It looked like mistakes by the Hawks and their failure to capitalize on Oilers penalties would doom them. For the second straight game, the Hawks failed to take advantage of four power plays in the second period.
Leon Draisaitl scored twice for the Oilers, and Connor McDavid fished the puck off of Corey Crawford's leg pad for a power-play goal late in the second period and a 3-2 lead.
Draisaitl's second goal started with a turnover by the Hawks in their end, and he poked in a rebound of Matt Benning's shot.
But the Hawks rallied, starting when Highmore deflected in a Slater Koekkoek pass _ after Koekkoek received the puck from Olli Maatta _ for the equalizer.
Maatta led off the scoring 9:14 into the first period, his second consecutive game with a goal and third straight with a point.
Toews scored on the power play with 5 seconds left in the first off assists by Kirby Dach and Alex DeBrincat.
