Blackhawks sign Ian Mitchell to a 3-year entry-level contract

Blackhawks defensive prospect Ian Mitchell agreed to terms on a three-year entry-level contract, the team announced Monday.

The average annual value and other details of the deal haven't been determined because of the suspension of the NHL season as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Mitchell, the Hawks' second-round draft pick in 2017, will forgo his senior season at the University of Denver. He returned to school last season because he was team captain and felt "getting that one year more seasoned" would be important to his development.

The 21-year-old finished his junior year and was a first-team All-American and first-team All-National Collegiate Hockey Conference selection. He tied for sixth among NCAA defensemen with 32 points (10 goals and 22 assists).

Mitchell and Adam Boqvist, who is signed through 2021-22, represent the team's future blue line, though Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook are signed through 2023 and 2024, respectively.
