Blackhawks outlast Maple Leafs in shootout, 5-4

CHICAGO _ The Blackhawks defeated the Maple Leafs 5-4 in a shootout Saturday night at the United Center.

The Hawks got on the board first thanks to a goal from Artem Anisimov 3 minutes, 36 seconds into the game. Artemi Panarin helped set up a goal with a pretty move around Maple Leafs center Nazem Kadri. Panarin fed Anisimov for the pretty one-time goal. The Hawks appeared as if they were going to take the lead into the dressing room before the Maple Leafs tied it. Tyler Bozak redirected a feed from Jake Gardiner with just 14 seconds remaining in the period.

Then the Hawks' atrocious penalty kill struck again in the second period. After a holding penalty on Marcus Kruger, one of the Hawks' top penalty killers, William Nylander sniped home a one-timer from the right circle for a 2-1 Leafs lead at 9:28.

Tyler Motte tied it for the Hawks at 11:08 by scoring his second goal in as many nights when he stuffed home a rebound of a Brian Campbell shot, but the Leafs again scored late in the period when James van Riemsdyk, the brother of injured Hawks defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk, scored an unassisted goal at 18:16 on a loose puck in front of Scott Darling.

With the Hawks pressing to come up with the equalizer in the third, the Leafs took advantage of a rush chance. After the speedy Auston Matthews outraced the Hawks down the ice, Nylander cleaned up his handiwork by putting in a loose puck at 4:46 to make it 4-2.

But the Hawks came back late to tie

Anisimov scored his second goal of the night off a rebound from a Brian Campbell shot at 17:32. Then with an extra attacker, Richard Panik scored his sixth goal of the season at 18:32. It was his sixth goal of the season.

Marian Hossa returned to the ice after missing Friday's game because of a lower-body injury he suffered Tuesday. Hossa skated on a line with Marcus Kruger and Ryan Hartman.
