Blackhawks lead Stars 3-1 after first period

Feb. 07--The Blackhawks, who were shut out in their last visit to Dallas on Dec. 22, lead the Stars 3-1 after the first period on Saturday and the American Airlines Center.

The Hawks wasted little time -- just 34 seconds -- showing Saturday would be at least a little different than their previous visit, when the Stars shut them out 4-0. Andrew Shaw drew a penalty John Klingberg, giving the Hawks a power play after their first shift of the game.

Then just five seconds into the power play, and 34 seconds into the game, Brent Seabrook put the Hawks on top when he blasted a slapshot at the right circle past former Hawk defenseman Johnny Oduya and goaltender Antti Niemi for a 1-0 lead.

After a pair of penalties on Stars winger Ales Hemsky and Jonathan Toews, Trevor van Riemsdyk timed a one-time perfectly on a rebound following a shot from Artemi Panarin. Van Riemsdyk's goal from the left circle, which was also the second in two games the Hawks scored 4-on-4, put the Hawks ahead 2-0 at 16:26.

Tyler Seguin cut the deficit to 2-1 when he put home a rebound off a shot from Jamie Benn at 17:46, but the Hawks seized the momentum not long after on the penalty kill. Toews seized the puck and put on a series of slick moves to evade defenders and carry the puck all the way to Niemi, who stopped Toews initial shot.

But Marian Hossa was trailing the play and cleaned up the rebound for a 3-1 Hawks lead, giving Hossa his 496th career goal and the second shorthanded goal for the Hawks in two games.
