Blackburn United fall to fourth straight defeat despite fast start against Musselburgh Athletic

A goal inside the opening minute wasn’t enough to get Blackburn United off the mark as they suffered a 4-2 home defeat to Musselburgh Athletic.

The loss means United are still searching for their first point of the East of Scotland Premier Division season - but as with previous defeats there were at least plenty of positives to take from the performance.

The returning Danny Campbell opened the scoring with a fine finish across goal barely 60 seconds after kick-off and the hosts looked an attacking threat all game.

Defensive errors, though, would cost them at least a share of the spoils.

Despite Blackburn’s fast start, the first half was dominated by Musselburgh and they were deservedly in front at the break.

Dean Ballantyne should have netted a ninth minute equaliser when he jinked beyond three defenders but dragged his effort wide when one-on-one with Craig Saunders.

The visitors wouldn’t have to wait long, though, as they were on level terms four minutes later when a Bradley White strike at the back post went under the diving Saunders.

Ballantyne was a threat all afternoon and headed over the bar before getting his name on the scoresheet midway through the first half.

Defensive dithering from a throw-in allowed Connor Thomson to tee up the striker who duly swept the ball into the net.

The hosts were in fine form at the start of the second half with Campbell seeing a wonderful curling effort crash back off the post before both he and Stuart McLeod went close.

When the equaliser arrived just eight minutes after the restart, there was no surprise.

McLeod latched onto a great cross from the right-wing by James Mildren to level things up.

The two sides appeared evenly matched from that point, but a Saunders error 20 minutes from time changed the course of the game.

The keeper fumbled when attempting to keep the ball in play with White collecting and finding Ballantyne in a congested area for the striker to roll the ball home for his second of the afternoon.

In searching for a way back into the game, Blackburn were vulnerable at the back and the points were sealed seven minutes from time when Ballantyne completed his impressive afternoon’s work with an assist as substitute Jackie Myles slotted home Athletic’s fourth.

United had gone close moments earlier as Mildren’s header flashed across the face of goal but it would be another frustrating afternoon for the Burnie.
