Blackburn Rovers face injury crisis ahead of Leeds United clash as Kalvin Phillips sends message

Here is your Leeds United morning digest for Saturday, July 4.

Blackburn Rovers injury update

Blackburn Rovers face something of an injury crisis ahead of today's tussle with Leeds United at Ewood Park.

It isn't just injuries that pose a problem to Rovers boss Tony Mowbray, as striker Ben Brereton begins a three-match ban after being sent-off during Tuesday evening's 2-0 defeat to Barnsley at Oakwell.

Brereton joins a long list of absentees for tomorrow's showdown with Bielsa's side, with Mowbray currently without Lewis Travis, Amari'i Bell, Derrick Williams, Corry Evans and Joe Rankin-Costello, all of whom are sidelined with injury issues.

Elsewhere, midfield duo Corry Evans, who has a broken toe, and long-term absentee Bradley Dack remain sidelined.

Kalvin Phillips issues England message

Last month, England chief Southgate, who would have been hoping to replicate the Three Lions' success in Russia at the 2018 World Cup this summer, admitted that Phillips, alongside fellow Leeds star Ben White, who has enjoyed an outstanding season on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion, will be under consideration for making his squad for Euro 2021 - and now Kalvin Phillips has responded.

"I think I caught it. I just read the little bit when my name was mentioned. I think he mentioned that the coronavirus period could be a good thing for us as we could be, eventually, involved.

"That would be massive for me. I have always wanted to play for England and I have always wanted to be recognised by somebody at international level.

"It is the same with Ben, he is a great player. He has done very well, obviously not playing in the Championship before, and he has come in and done exceptionally well. I think, especially if he keeps working hard, he has a very bright future ahead of him."

Noel Whelan delighted by dressing room arguments

Noel Whelan has admitted he was delighted to hear that there were arguments in the Leeds United dressing room following the 1-1 draw with Luton Town.

Kalvin Phillips stated there were heated discussions in the aftermath of the match and Whelan believes that sort of passion and anger has been missing in the past.

“If someone’s performance is not up to scratch, they should be questioned and there should be these arguments. It just shows you care. Back in the day, people would be literally strung up against the wall for not doing their job right, that’s just part and parcel," he told Football Insider.

“I want to see more of that, quite frankly. I’m glad they’re having these discussions, I’m glad they’re falling out with one another at times for the sake of the result, it’s important."
