Blackburn Rovers assessing Leeds United's Ian Poveda before making decision on run-in involvement

Ian Poveda could return to action for Blackburn Rovers this season after recovering from the injury that threatened to bring an early end to his campaign. He completed the majority of his rehabilitation back with Leeds United but may return to his loan club for their final few games of the season.

Poveda is due to return to Blackburn in the coming days. Mowbray will assess the Leeds United man before making a decision on whether he will feature in the final weeks of the season.

Tony Mowbray’s side remain in play-off contention and he will want to have as many players as possible available, especially after injuries to his two star men, Ben Brereton-Diaz and Bradley Dack, ruined their chances of automatic promotion. When speaking about Poveda, the Rovers boss said: “We’ll decide whether he comes and gets involved for the last few weeks of the season with us.

“We’ll then have to assess how he looks on the grass and whether we think he could help us or not. We’re still paying our contribution towards his salary so if he’s fit then he should be back and we’ll try and negotiate that he comes back next week.”

The 22-year-old’s last appearance came all the way back in November when he left the pitch on a stretcher in Blackburn’s 1-1 draw with Bristol City. He had just started to break into the team at Ewood Park when he sustained a fracture and ligament damage to his ankle.

Currently eighth in the Championship, Blackburn will have to be faultless in their final three games of the season if they are to have any chance of making the play-offs. Poveda will be desperate to repay Mowbray’s faith in him if he is deemed fit enough to be involved, even from the bench.

The trio of matches for the young midfielder also provide him with the chance to reignite his career, either at Leeds or elsewhere after it had started to stagnate under Marcelo Bielsa.
