Blackburn Rovers and Tony Mowbray facing anxious wait on key decision for Bristol City clash

Blackburn Rovers boss Tony Mowbray is facing an anxious wait as to whether or not he can include Darragh Lenihan in his side for the game against Bristol City.

The Rovers captain was sent off during the 2-2 draw with Brentford on Saturday and Blackburn have since appealed his dismissal.

However, Blackburn are yet to hear a verdict from the FA on whether the Republic of Ireland defender's one-game suspension has been rescinded, leaving Rovers boss Tony Mowbray with a selection dilemma ahead of the clash with Bristol City at Ashton Gate.

It has been reported by Lancs Live that Lenihan has travelled with the squad to Bristol, but a potential return for Derrick Williams could be on the cards after the central defender came through training on Tuesday unscathed, if Lenihan is not cleared to play.

If Lenihan is eligible then he should partner Daniel Ayala at centre-half but if not, Williams is expected to fill the void given Scott Wharton's injury.

Speaking about the red card and the subsequent appeal, Mowbray told iFollow Rovers: “I think it was right we appealed because my first reaction was that it was a really poor decision.

“I’m not sure it was even a foul, never mind a sending off.

“Let’s wait and see. I think it's worth it, even though it would only have been a one-game ban.

“We’d rather be playing with Darragh Lenihan in the team than without Darragh Lenihan.

“We’ve appealed it and let’s see what comes back.

“If they uphold the referee’s decision then we’ll get on with it, but if they side with us then he’ll be available to play on Wednesday.”

A decision on the appeal is expected before the game this evening.
