Blackberry Messenger is shutting down - and nostalgic fans are devastated

Whether it was messaging your mates or flirting with a crush, Blackberry Messenger (BBM) was the go-to messenger service for most people in the mid-2000s.

Now, almost 14 years after it was first released, BBM is finally shutting down.

Blackberry has announced that the messaging service will be closing on 31 May.

In a blog about the change, it wrote: “Though we are sad to say goodbye, the time has come to sunset the BBM consumer service, and for us to move on.

Farewell, BBM (Blackberry)

YouTube is finally RETURNING to Fire TV after Google and Amazon settle feud

“We are grateful for your support and wish to thank everyone, especially our users, partners, and employees, for being part of the BBM consumer service journey.

“We hope you will cherish many fond memories of BBM consumer service that helped shape messenger platforms to become what they are today.”

While BBM isn’t used by many people anymore, many have taken to Twitter to mourn the end of the nostalgic platform.

One user wrote: “Year 9 would have never been the same.”

Another said: “Damn one of the most revolutionary social media and instant messaging platforms ever created. BBM got me through high school this is a sad day.”

And one joked: “Goodbye BBM. I used to flirt a lot thanks to you.”

The closure of BBM comes despite Blackberry's best efforts to keep it going. In 2013, the firm launched iOS and Android BBM apps , but sadly they didn't prove popular.

Blackberry explained: "We set out to reinvigorate BBM consumer service, one of the most loved instant messaging applications, as a cross-platform service where users can not only chat and share life experiences, but also consume content and use payment services.

"We poured our hearts into making this a reality, and we are proud of what we have built to date.

"The technology industry however, is very fluid, and in spite of our substantial efforts, users have moved on to other platforms, while new users proved difficult to sign on."

Farewell, BBM.
