Black Panther star Angela Bassett becomes first actor to earn Oscar nomination for Marvel film

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever star Angela Bassett has made history after becoming the first actor from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to be nominated for an Academy Award for their performance in a comic book adaptation. The nominations for the 95th Oscars have been confirmed today, and Marvel Studios has fared well so far with five nominations.

Most notably, the superhero sequel has bagged a Best Supporting Actress nod for Angela Bassett, who plays Queen Ramonda in the blockbuster. The character is the mother of the late King T’Challa, who was played by Chadwick Boseman until his tragic death in 2020.

The actress already became the first Marvel star to win a major acting award for a movie based on the comic books earlier this year when she took home the Golden Globe for her performance in the film. She has now become the first Oscar-nominated star, too, as well as picking up a BAFTA and Screen Actors Guild award nod for the role.

The 64-year-old New Yorker has had an extensive career in the film business, and is perhaps best known for starring roles in Denzel Washington epic Malcolm X, The Notorious B.I.G. biopic in Notorious, as well as her performances in several films throughout the MCU.

This is her second Oscar nomination, the first coming in 1993 for her starring role in Tina Turner biopic What's Love Got to Do with It. In the Best Supporting Actress category at this year’s ceremony, Bassett will go up against The Whale star Hong Chau, The Banshees of Inisherin’s Kerry Condon, and Everything Everywhere All at Once co-stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu.
