Black on the Square 2023: When is the cultural London festival and how to get involved?

Black on the Square aims to celebrate Black culture and creativity in the form of music, spoken word, and dance.

Brought to you by the Mayor of London, music genres on offer include jazz, rap, and soul, as well as a variety of London’s Black nightlife.

DJ sets and live music will be hosted by club nights and music collectives, with performances from artists like MOBO Unsung, Spit Game UK, rapper ENNY of Peng Black Girls fame, DJ sets from Touching Bass, Queer Bruk, and more.

On top of these sets, the main stage will feature performances from singer Enny and rappers BXKS, while social media personalities The Spit Game UK will interact with those in the crowd by performing freestyle raps.

There’s also a dedicated exhibition that uncovers the Black British experience through the lens of photography, as well as various art installations from Black Londoners.

In between performances, visitors can enjoy a range of Caribbean food on sale.

Here’s a look at how to get involved with Black on the Square this year.

How to get involved with Black on the Square 2023

Black on the Square takes place on Saturday, September 2, starting from midday and running until 6pm.

As noted above, the festival will take place in London’s Trafalgar Square and is completely free to attend.

While it’s too late to apply for a stall of your own at Black on the Square, you are still more than welcome to attend and see all the exhibitions and performances on offer.

“London’s Black communities are a vital part of the rich fabric of our city, and I am proud that this brand new, free event will showcase and champion the sheer breadth of the capital’s Black creative talent,” said Sadiq Khan.
