Black man jogging through park 'shot dead by white father and son hunting burglar'

A grand jury will decide if a white father and son face charges over the death of a 25-year-old black man who was shout while out for a Sunday jog.

Ahmaud Arbery died in February after he went for a run in his neighbourhood outside Brunswick, Georgia, when Gregory McMichael and adult son Travis, allegedly pulled up beside him and shot him.

The father, a former law enforcement officer, told he and his son began pursuing Mr Arbery after suspecting him of involvement in a string of recent break-ins.

Prosecutors had been reluctant to bring charges against the pair, prompting an outcry.

The case has been taken up by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and is now set to go before a grand jury in the US to determine whether the gunman and his accomplice should be charged.

John Perry, local pastor and president of the local NAACP chapter, said he was disappointed the alleged gunmen were still free and said it was "a case of outright murder".

He told reporters: "It’s very problematic. To shoot and kill and not get arrested, it doesn’t compute."

A police report said McMichael claimed they followed the running man and came to a stop beside him.

It says McMichael shouted, "Stop, stop, we want to talk to you."

McMichael told police his son Travis got out of the truck holding a shotgun, at which point Mr Arbery attacked him, and Mr Arbery got shot while wrestling for the gun.

Tom Durden, the acting district attorney for a neighboring district, said in a letter posted on Facebook that he believed “the case should be presented to the grand jury of Glynn county for consideration of criminal charges against those involved in the death of Mr Arbery”.

The prosecutor added that the case is unlikely to be heard imminently due to court restrictions caused by coronavirus.

Shocking dashcam footage from another car, shows the moment Mr Arbery is shot and falls to the floor, after the altercation with the father and son.
