Black Lives Matter protest proposed to take place in Glasgow

A Black Lives Matter protest has been proposed to take place in Glasgow next weekend.

The event is due to take place outside the City Chambers on Sunday, June 7.

It comes amid protests that have erupted in at least 30 cities in the USA over the death of unarmed black man George Floyd at the hands of a police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has been arrested and charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

Those looking to attend are strongly advised to bring masks and any appropriate protective wear, with people attending in groups asked to stick to their own groups and maintain adequate social distancing amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The event description says that the protest is being held in the city in response to the "horrific crimes within the last few weeks, especially, committed by the hands of oppressive forces in America".

It adds: "it is essential we recognise that the UK also has built itself on crimes just as severe, past and present".
