Black Lives Matter protest planned for Leeds following George Floyd's death

A "peaceful protest" is set to take place in Leeds city centre at the weekend in response to the recent death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

George Floyd, an African-American man, died after being arrested by a white police officer outside a grocery store in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on May 25.

Footage of Mr Floyd's arrest, in which an officer pinned him to the floor by his neck, has been circulated widely online and has sparked protests across the country.

However, protests have spread far beyond America, with many cities in the UK also organising protests in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, which seeks an end to violence against black communities globally.

Now, a poster has circulated on social media advertising a "peaceful protest" in support of Black Lives Matter in Leeds.

The poster says that a "peaceful protest against police brutality in the US, UK and around the world" has been organised for June 6, outside Leeds Town Hall at 1pm.

Thousands of protesters also took to London's Trafalgar Square on Sunday (May 31) and protests have spread to cities such as Manchester, with people showing solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and condemning the death of Mr Floyd.

Mr Floyd's arresting officer, Derek Chauvin, has since been charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter.
