Black Lives Matter: Lord Mayor of Dublin opens online book of condolence for George Floyd

Dublin City Council have opened an online book of condolence for George Floyd.

Lord Mayor of Dublin Tom Brabazon announced the opening of the book, which will be available until June 17.

All messages in the book will be printed and presented to the US Embassy in Dublin.

The Book of Condolence will be available online at  www.bit.ly/GeorgeFloydCondolence.

Mr Floyd was a black man who was killed when a white police officer knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes in Minneapolis in the United States.

His death has since sparked worldwide outrage, with continued protests in the US against oppression and police brutality on the black community.

A Black Lives Matter protest took place in Dublin on Bank Holiday Monday. A further protest which was planned for June 8 has been cancelled due to coronavirus legislation which prohibits mass gatherings.

Lord Mayor Tom Brabazon said: “All over the world people have reacted to the killing of George Floyd in Minnesota.

"I am opening this Book of Condolence to allow the citizens of Dublin to express their sympathies to the family and their support for all who raise awareness of and fight against racial injustice worldwide.”
