Black Lives Matter Dublin protest sees hundreds gather outside US Embassy

Black Lives Matter demonstrations have taken place in cities across Ireland, with crowds gathering outside Dublin's US Embassy.

The protest, organised by MASI, Black Pride Ireland, and MERJ, began at 3pm with those in attendance urged to wear face masks and bring hand sanitiser.

It was one of several protests taking place across Ireland, with others taking place in Waterford, Galway, Limerick and Belfast.

There were also calls for social distancing to be observed as crowds protested outside the US Embassy.

Marks were made on the road to show people how far apart to stand.

Protesters appeared closer together as more numbers arrived, many holding placards which carried messages of support for the Black Lives Matter campaign.

During the protest, they took a knee and chanted "I Can't Breathe" in memory of the lives of unarmed black people who have been killed by police brutality.

The protest was organised following almost two weeks of protest in the US, where a black man named George Floyd was killed when a white police officer put his knee on his neck for almost nine minutes.

A video of the horrific murder in which Mr Floyd can be heard pleading "I can't breathe" became viral online, prompting the mass protests in the US against police brutality on the black community.

Another protest planned for Monday was cancelled by organisers following consultation with An Garda Siochana.

Dublin City Council have opened an online book of condolence for George Floyd.

Lord Mayor of Dublin Tom Brabazon announced the opening of the book, which will be available until June 17.

All messages in the book will be printed and presented to the US Embassy in Dublin.

The Book of Condolence will be available online at  www.bit.ly/GeorgeFloydCondolence.
