Black Friday sees huge queues in Cardiff city centre

These were the scenes in Cardiff city centre on Black Friday as Christmas shoppers looked for a bargain.

Queues of people were seen lining up outside shops and Christmas attractions, and St David's shopping centre announced just before midday that it was nearing capacity.

It tweeted: "St David's is busy today. If you are planning to visit, we are currently managing capacity at the entrances to keep all our guests safe so you may need to wait. Thank you for your patience."

Police said they were stepping up vigilance in the city centre this weekend, and there are extra patrols on trains as Cardiff prepares for the Black Friday sales.

Transport for Wales (TFW) is also using extra staff across its network after more than 2,000 people had to be asked to wear a face mask last weekend.

Police have also been given extra powers to carry out random checks on vehicles in Cardiff.

South Wales Police say they will use the powers to try to ensure those visiting Cardiff city centre are not breaching any coronavirus rules.

Welsh Government ministers are set to continue talks on Friday about whether further restrictions are needed in Wales in the run up to Christmas.

It is unclear if shops will have to close in the run up to Christmas as the number of cases in Wales rises.

On Thursday, it was reported that a further 28 people died with coronavirus in Wales and more than 1,200 new positive cases were confirmed.
