Black Friday 2019: UK date, best deals and how it got its name

Black Friday is one of the biggest shopping days of the year, with more shops participating every year.

The day of bargains started as an American tradition, taking place on the Friday after Thanksgiving, but has been taken on by shoppers across the UK for many years now.

The official date of this year's Black Friday event takes place on Friday, November 29.

In recent years, Black Friday grown from a one-day only event to a week-long sales period for some retailers, giving shoppers more time to grab a bargain.

Why is it called Black Friday?

The term Black Friday was first used in 1951.

It described people who called in sick the day after Thanksgiving so that they had the time to go to the shops and begin their Christmas shopping.

The Friday after Thanksgiving was a very profitable day for businesses and in order to make clear profit gain accountants used black ink their account books, hence the phrase 'Black Friday'.

Black Friday only seemed to take off in the UK in 2010 and the chaos that ensued made the TV news, but today many people have swapped the shopping centres for getting a good bargain online.

Black Friday takes place on Friday, November 29.

Which retailers usually take part in Black Friday?

Each year, those taking part does change slightly, however judging by last year, retailers such as Debenhams release offers to its websites in the first instance and then across its stores the next day.

Amazon is expected offers on Echo Dots, Kindles, Fire TV sticks and much more.

Tesco and Pandora have also taken part in the past.
