Jan. 13--Black Ensemble Theater has announced its 40th anniversary season, featuring remounts of executive director Jackie Taylor's past hit shows. The slate includes seven shows, up from the usual five, in celebration of the anniversary year.
First up, running in repertory Feb. 13 -- March 16, are "Doo Wop Shoo Bop," co-written by Jimmy Tillman, and "Those Sensational Soulful '60s." The revues, to be directed by Taylor, take on the two genres with songs from The Platters, The Drifters, The Temptations, The Four Tops and more.
Next is "Don't Make Me Over (In Tribute to Dionne Warwick)," (April 9 -- May 15) to be helmed by Rueben Echoles. The production follows Warwick's artistic journey and showcases 23 of her songs.
Following is "The Marvin Gaye Story (Don't Talk About My Father Because God Is My Friend)," Taylor's tribute to the "Prince of Soul." The production will be directed by Daryl L. Brooks and run June 4 -- July 10.
After that comes the return of "The Jackie Wilson Story" (July 30 -- Sept. 4). Taylor will direct the production, previously remounted in 2012 after a national tour in 2002, about the life of the soul singer and songwriter.
"I Am Who I Am (The Story of Teddy Pendergrass)" is next, to be directed by Daryl Brooks. Opening Sept. 24 and closing Oct. 30, the production charts the career of the '70s singing sex symbol.
Closing out the season is "The Other Cinderella," (Nov. 26 -- Jan. 8) Taylor's holiday classic from 1976. Daryl Brooks will direct. Black Ensemble Theater is located at 4450 N. Clark St.
