Black Coffee’s favourite tracks

Black Coffee
Black Coffee

The track I’ll be opening my next DJ set with
Jackie Queens: Conqueror (Enoo Napa Opaque Mix)

It has a bit of pop in it, so I like to play my edit without the chorus.

The track I always play to rescue a dancefloor
Michael Jackson: Thriller (Black Motion Remix

Black Motion has quickly became one of the biggest names in South Africa, and we recently collaborated on a remix for Avicii.

The ideal festival track
Culoe De Song: Y.O.U.D.

Out on Dixon’s Innervisions – people love its energy everywhere I play it. The strings are a tsunami. Modern and South African – I’m proud to play it.

The track I think has been unfairly slept on this year
Hyenah: The Wish (Dub)

This song has everything: the percussive groove; the hypnotic touch; the modern loopy side. A great DJ tool and a ritual in my set. A universal instinctive groove. I feel it!

The track I’d play to show off my eclectic tastes
Fat Freddy’s Drop: Mother Mother

Jazzy. Soul. Brass section is amazing. Vocals are fantastic. I am singing it right now. One of my dream collaborations – I hope they read this interview!

The track I’d play at my auntie’s wedding
Black Box: Fantasy

A huge hit in South Africa. Even the cows know it! This song was so big that it is one of the few international songs that influenced the birth of kwaito back in the day.

The track I’d play at sunset in Ibiza
Musaria Feat Saturna: Moments (XtetiQsoul Fantasy Mix)

Sunset + Ibiza + Circoloco + this song = magic.

The track that should have been a crossover hit
DJ Clock Feat Beatenberg: Pluto (Remember You)

Danceable groove with a pop approach. The guitar loop is very African and addictive. The vocals are perfectly written. Women love it. Boys like to see women loving it. This has been a South African anthem from kids to radio to TV to clubs.

The track I’d play at my funeral
Larry Heard: Flight Of The Comet

This has always been a very special song to me. It inspired the producer in me from the beginning. I believe it is exactly what Larry Heard wanted in the song and it inspired me to do that with all my work. It has calmness, feeling, peace and it is very majestic. Everything you want to have in a good life.
