Black Cats reveal first pre-season friendly against Spennymoor Town

Sunderland will travel to Spennymoor Town in their first pre-season fixture ahead of the 2021-22 season.

The Black Cats will travel to the Brewery Field on Saturday, July 3 at 3pm.

The Wearsider's aren't the only big names to be heading to the ground this summer. Austria's international side utilised the facilities ahead of their Euro 2020 warm-up game against England at the Riverside.

Lee Johnson's side will travel to the National League North outfit as part of their preparation for their fourth campaign in League One.

Further details are set to be released in due course.

The Black Cats head coach revealed he would have liked to take the squad to Marbella for pre-season, but current Covid-19 travel restrictions have put an end to that.

Johnson has also revealed the club could travel to Scotland to honour a friendly agreement with Ross County.

"It's difficult to know what to do for pre-season at the moment given the situation, but of course we have to do some planning," Johnson told ChronicleLive.

"We've talked about a few things, one of those being a visit to Scotland.

"One of the things I want is a bit of interaction with the fans, so I thought that if we went to Scotland we might take a few up there.

"At some point over the next couple of years, as part of the deal that brought Ross Stewart to us, we will play Ross County at their place and that will be a consideration.

"Saying that, I think their fixtures start early and given the amount of our players whose contracts expired, we have to get the right amount of people through the door to make it effective."

Sunderland's pre-season plans are expected to be announced later in the month.
