The Bhumjaithai Party (BJT) submitted the party's proposed constitutional amendment bill to parliament.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, accompanying members of his team, said BJT was the first party to take action in response to public demands expressed through the referendum process.

Mr Anutin, also the BJT leader, and party MPs presented the draft amendment to House Speaker Sophon Zarum on Wednesday.

The proposal will now be placed on the parliamentary agenda.

Mr Sophon said additional proposals from other parties could also be submitted for deliberation. However, as BJT was the first major party to formally lodge a proposal, its draft would proceed to the next parliamentary stage.

Mr Anutin said the move reflected the party's commitment to listening to the wishes of the public regarding constitutional reform, particularly following referendum results indicating support for amendments to certain sections of the charter.

"The Bhumjaithai Party is responding directly to the people's demands," he said. "We are a party for all citizens and the first to submit an amendment draft. This demonstrates our intentions clearly."

He also rejected criticism accusing the party of lacking sincerity in its support for democratic reform.

Mr Anutin said the party was committed to constitutional change and had acted in response to public opinion rather than political pressure.
