BJP seeks action against Modi, Shah effigy burners

CHANDIGARH: Punjab BJP general secretary Subhash Sharma has written to the DGP seeking registration of an FIR against SKM leaders for promoting enmity between different groups, outraging religious sentiments, mischief and other relevant sections of the law, for deliberately hurting feelings of Hindus by calling for burning of effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah on Dussehra.

“Any attempt to disrespect and disturb Dussehra should be curtailed,” Sharma wrote in his letter. Dussehra is an important festival in which effigies of Ravan, Kumbhkaran and Meghnad are burnt after a due religious process. “There is sanctity of that process. Religious sentiments will be hurt if any disruption is created by forces which are deliberately trying to instigate and create an atmosphere of disturbance in the festive season,” he added.

Sharma has also brought to the notice of the DGP that the Supreme Court, in some cases, had already given directions to the police to take preventive measures in case some forces try to breach peace and create disharmony on religious festivals. “Our festivals are a part of our lives and many people celebrate Dussehra with religious purposes,” he added.

It would be a colossal mistake if this sensitive issue is not handled with care and competence, he said. The SKM decision to burn the effigies of the Prime Minister and home minister is an indication of their intentions and the police should be extremely vigilant to maintain the “sanctity of the religious festival”, he added.
