BJP raises questions over police's 'soft action' against accused who chopped off woman's body parts in Bihar's Bhagalpur

PATNA: BJP on Wednesday raised questions over Bhagalpur Police’s alleged “soft action” against the accused persons who allegedly chopped off breasts and other body parts of a woman, leading to her death, after she failed to pay back debt amount.

The horrific incident of murder of Neelam Yadav occurred near Pirpainti Bazar under Pirpainti police station area of Bihar’s Bhagalpur district on last Saturday.

“The way the Bhagalpur SP is protecting the murderers of Neelam Yadav, is very saddening. What the Bhagalpur SP wants to say? Does he want to say that if a person borrows money from the members of a minority community, his/ her limps and private parts of the body will be chopped off? In which direction the SP wants to take the case? It is a very condemnable incident,” Bihar BJP president Sanjay Jaiswal said in a video statement released here on Wednesday.

Jaiswal said the SP’s statement was very saddening and he (SP) should tender an apology over his statement. The BJP leader further urged the state government to try the case of Neelam’s murder in a fast-track court to ensure speedy trail.

The Bhagalpur police have arrested two persons in Neelam’s murder case. The arrested persons have been identified as Shakeel Miyan and his associate Judin Miyan who were named as accused by Neelam’s family members.

As per police investigation, accused Shakeel Miyan allegedly chopped off the woman’s body parts including her limbs, on Saturday (December 3) after she allegedly failed to return the money borrowed from him for her daughter's wedding.

“The deceased's family had named two persons as accused and both of them have already been arrested. During investigation, it was found that the deceased and the accused were neighbours and had friendly relations. She borrowed money from him for her daughter's wedding but was unable to return it. After which, Shakeel allegedly attacked her with a sharp weapon and she succumbed to the injuries during treatment at a local hospital,” Bhagalpur City Superintendent of Police (SP) Swarn Prabhat told media persons.

Neelam’s husband Ashok Yadav, however, alleged that Shakeel committed the heinous crime after he was forbidden from entering their home. “Previously Shakeel used to frequently visit our home but when we barred his entry, that is why he committed this act,” Ashok told reporters in Bhagalpur.

Reacting over the incident, the BJP OBC Morcha's national general secretary and Bihar BJP spokesperson Dr Nikhil Anand on Wednesday said, “The Bhagalpur police administration is under pressure from the CM Nitish Kumar to divert the whole issue by underplaying it.”

Nikhil sought an investigation if the PFI has spread its wings in the area or accused persons have any Islamic fundamentalist link. Besides demanding the speedy trial in the case, Nikhil urged the CM to provide an ex gratia payment of Rs one crore to the next kin of the deceased woman.
