Internet shutdowns in Rajasthan caused ₹800 crore losses in a month: BJP

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday hit out against the Congress government in Rajasthan over Internet shutdowns in the State, saying four shutdowns in the past month caused a loss of ₹800 crore.

Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters, BJP spokesperson Rajyavardhan Rathore cited a tweet by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in December 2019 that said the Centre had no right to shutdown colleges, telephone and the Internet, in the context of Jammu & Kashmir. Mr. Rathore accused the Congress of having “double standards” when it came to Rajasthan.

While there were terror attacks in Jammu & Kashmir, the Rajasthan government was shutting down Internet services with the excuse of preventing cheating during competitive exams. Businesses, medical facilities and banking had been affected by the Internet closures, he said.
