Bizarre reason McDonalds, Dominos and Burger King are tweeting about Nick Pope

Newcastle United goalkeeper Nick Pope bizarrely became the centre of attention on social media this afternoon. Astonishingly, a Burger King Twitter poll asking followers whether they prefer gherkins or tomatoes resulted in the Magpies’ shot-stopper trending number one in the UK.

Fan account @ToonPolls jokingly hijacked an innocent survey and fellow supporters responded in their droves. Before long, a wave of Newcastle fans replied “Nick Pope” to Burger King - and the meme quickly caught on.

Rival fast-food chain McDonalds jumped on the bandwagon as well as big-hitters Amazon, Specsavers, easyJet and the EFL. What started as typical Tyneside satire became the biggest - albeit weirdest - talking point on social media.

Another Nick Pope, based in Tucson, Arizona, was just as confused as everyone else...

Pope will likely be dumbfounded at the random heroic status he has received online. Just two months after his £10million arrival, the England international appears to have earned his stripes as Newcastle number one - starting the season opener against Nottingham Forest.

A clean sheet was the perfect way to start his Tyneside career. Another against Brighton tomorrow may just send Twitter back into a frenzy!
