Eddie Howe watches Newcastle's clash with Brighton end with centre-back in goals in bizarre Premier League scenes

Former Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe watched on as Newcastle United failed to capitalise on Brighton finishing the match without a recognised goalkeeper.

The Saturday evening kick off ended 1-1 at the Amex but wasn't short on drama.

Brighton keeper Robert Sanchez was shown a straight red card for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity in second half stoppage time and with all substitutions made, centre-back Lewis Dunk had to put on the gloves.

The resulting Magpies free kick from the dismissal was disappointing as Jonjo Shelvey opted for a dink into the back post rather than a direct shot at the Brighton defender.

Newcastle move off the foot of the English Premier League table, leapfrogging fellow strugglers Norwich on goal difference.

Howe will have his work cut out to prevent a relegation fight if the deal to become the new Toon head coach is finalised as they already sit five points from safety.

The wait for a first victory of the season continues. Could Howe be the man to change that fortunes? The 43-year old guided Bournemouth to a record ninth place finish in the 2016/17 season.
