Bizarre photo of man in wig pulling a face interrupts BBC Points West broadcast

People tuning in to watch the news yesterday morning (May 29) were met with rather an unusual sight.

Our sister site Somerset Live reported that as BBC Breakfast presenters Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt passed over to the regional news, the voice of a Points West presenter could be heard but not seen.

Instead, the screen was taken over by a picture of a man wearing a wig and a neckerchief, as he pulled a face in front of a green backdrop.

This bizarre image was shown on screen for around 30 seconds and the video above, which captures the moment, was recorded by viewer Mark Alley.

The first story of the morning was concerning the leader of Somerset County Council, but the picture was certainly not of David Fothergill.

BBC described the issue as a "technical fault" that was "quickly resolved".

At first, the morning presenter seemed unaware of the fault, but as the clip progresses, you can hear the presenter's voice noticeably slow down - seemingly, in confusion - as she reaches the end of her script.

Linzi Alley was watching the broadcast as it happened and found it "quite amusing".

She said: "I am not sure what happened to it this morning!

"We got the audio from the local broadcast, with the funny picture and then when they realised what was up on the screen they cut to the news from London."

A BBC spokesman confirmed that the image in the video appeared on viewers' screens and said: “A technical fault affected our output for around 30 seconds. It was quickly resolved.”
