Bizarre moment car spotted in the water at Ayr beach as onlooker captures risky move

This is the bizarre moment a car was pictured in the water at Ayr beach.

Shocked onlookers witnessed the estate-style car which had driven onto the beach near the Blackburn Esplanade then across the sand to park up as the tide came in.

The risky move was captured around 5.30pm yesterday and it's believed the vehicle was allowed to be there.

Baffled local Philip Elliot spotted the car parked in the water and had to zoom in using his phone camera to work out what was going on.

The Ayr resident, 33, said: “I had just parked to get something to eat, I looked over and randomly saw this car that was in the water.

“I didn’t know you could drive on Ayr beach; there’s a ramp next to Ayr India which allows tractors to get onto the beach.

“Whether it was allowed or not, the beach was busy enough with cars in the car park but this one was actually in the water.

“At first I thought someone just tried to drive into the sea.”

Philip noticed the reason for the car being parked was for a jet ski being collected as the occupants frantically tried to get the water craft onto a trailer before making a quick getaway.

He added: “They were scrambling to get the jet ski out and, to be honest, they were quite lucky.

“It wasn’t a 4x4 or anything you would think would be suitable. It was just a normal estate car. The salt water can’t be good for it.”

South Ayrshire Council say vehicles are permitted on beaches for recreational access, such as towing leisure craft.

A spokesperson added: "Anyone using our beaches should act responsibly at all times."
