Bizarre Dedryck Boyata kit gaffe lands Belgium in hot water with UEFA

Belgium have been charged by UEFA following a bizarre mix-up involving former Celtic defender Dedryck Boyata .

The Red Devils have landed in the dock after the centre-back mistakenly wore team-mate Michy Batshuayi's shirt during Saturday's 4-1 victory over Russia.

Boyata played the first-half wearing the correct number four jersey but reappeared after the interval sporting number 23, complete with Batshuayi's name on the back.

The Chelsea striker joked about the incident afterwards but UEFA have taken a dimmer view.

Their rules state: "Before each match, each team shall indicate in the relevant match sheet the numbers, full names, dates of birth and, if applicable, shirt names of the 23 players in the squad."

Belgium will find out whether they are to be punished at a hearing on December 12.

Batshuayi, however, saw the funny side on Instagram.

He posted a picture of Boyata wearing his jersey with the caption: "Happy to have realised this kid's dream yesterday."

Boyata now plays for Hertha Berlin after leaving Celtic on a free during the summer.

In October, the 28-year-old denied he'd gone on strike to try and force an exit the previous year.

He said: "It’s not true, I was accused of strikes last summer so I could move. I also played through the season, was in the Scottish team of the year and played my part in the title.

“The truth is, I’ve won everything at Celtic in four years. But it was time to start something new.

"The Bundesliga is a good challenge for me.”
